I don't/wouldn't tip. Someone doing their job deserves extra money for it from the customer? They don't like the pay they're on? leave. Simple as.

I think, if they had a better option, they would. Would you work for crap amounts of cash if you had a better option?

My mother worked as a waitress for years, so I know first hand how little wait staff get for a pay. I worked one summer in the public end of the food service industry and discovered that I didn't have the temperament to handle it.

Getting blamed for kitchen screw-ups without telling off the customer and the cook does not appeal to me. Getting no tip because the person didn't like the food they ordered is also not my thing.

Paying income tax on tips I never got (IRS has an estimate based on 15% tipping) also was not fun.

Result, I never worked as wait staff again. And I tip 20% for decent service. What I won't do is tip counter staff at Dunkin Donuts or Burger King. If I am not getting table service, then you are not getting wait staff wages.

Must be an US thing. Here people tip only if service is really good (and/or if waitress is hot) but noone looks at what % to pay - just round it up to a easy-to-pay number.

don't take this as a personal attack, but i would have had you charged with food tampering and, depending on where you live, you could spend up to a year in jail. if you want to be mad at someone for your empty wallet be mad at your boss for not paying you minimum wage or for not including a tip in the check. a customer has every right to pay the minimum price required for food and employers should be the ones responsible for paying their employees.

also imo just eat at mcdonalds or something. 1 dorrar per item for fast service and filling food; the employees are payed minimum wage and you aren't expected to tip. i can't wait until the sissy fine dining people realize how much more efficient fast food is so old crappy restaurants will go out of business and we can have more room for mcdonalds buildings and then every restaurant will be taco bell like in the sylvester stalone movie "demolition man". EMBRACE PROGRESS IN THE FOOD SERVICE INDUSTRY YOU IRRATIONAL WANKERS!

See how far (or fat) that gets you. I'd prefer to have some decent food.

Do you tip cashiers when you buy something from a shop? How about the people that clean the streets? How about the people who stack shelves or the people that unload giant trucks? They all work for shit and yet i don't see everyone jumping to their defense.

Tipping lol. I remember my dad went to UNOs where I got two pizzas for the family. At the end we get a bill and my dad feels nice so he pays 20 bucks to the waiter for tips (cost of the meal was $45). Little did he know that the waiter already included a $30 tip, so in the end we get charged over a hundred dollars for two pizzas that the family didn't even get filled for!

Tips should be optional and some places have forgotten that they are To Insure Prompt Service its not to give the waiter extra, but to make sure things go faster and give the waiter incentive for working harder.

Frankly? I don't even come from a country that tips. And you know - the people who stack shelves, the people who unload giant trucks... if I go into a bookshop or a clothes shop, I try not to mess the display up. I don't necessarily nicely refold everything, but I try to leave the stuff I pick up where I found them, instead of on the floor. (The children's section in some bookshops = perpetual giant mess.)

I don't think people should expect everyone to be nice, or go out of their way. I don't think a waiter should expect to be tipped, especially not for bad service. But I don't think you should stiff the waiter either, or carelessly mess up a bookshelf. They work for shit - I don't see why I should make things worse. I don't and can't make things better, but at least if I do something like put a book back on the same shelf in a bookshop, or try not to walk on that still-wet patch which the shopping mall janitor just cleaned... I don't know about you, but I call it consideration.

What about poor students living off a student loan - isn't it enough they come to your restaurant and spend money they don't have to have a decent meal once in a while, and keep your business running?

Blame your boss for not giving you a decent wage. Eat at places that pay waiters a decent wage. Do waiters/waitresses share wages with the cooks getting burned in the kitchen?

I do tip and have been a waiter/cook. Never 15% though. There is a restaurant in somewhere where the food is not charged the whole restaurant runs off tips and people pay more than they would have normally paid.

I don't tip, why should I? 1) Because the bill says: 10% for service charge and another 5% government tax. god knows where all those money goes. You want the tip, ask the appropriate people.

first of all, you would have never found my loogey.

second, i completely agree with you that restaurants should pay their staff at least minimum wage, if not the 10-15/hr dollars someone mentioned earlier like they do in europe. this is the fundamental problem.

however, it should be noted that all the other occupations mentioned so far (street cleaners, garbage men, etc.) all make at least minimum wage (most of them more). waiters in the U.S. make 2.13/hr - this is not enough to cover taxes, aka they DO NOT get a paycheck. they are relying solely on your goodwill and their waiting skills, hoping that the service they provide will warrant a decent tip. most of the time it feels like a completely thank-less job.

also, your suggestion that we all eat and mcdonalds - wut?? you do realize there is an obesity epidemic in america, right? please come back with a valid argument, although i won't get my hopes up since there really is no excuse for not tipping a decent waiter who met all your meal-related needs.

So basicly tipping is like giving money to homeless people?
